Wildfire Fuel Reduction & Defensible Space in Douglas County

Reducing the brush and fuel around your home to meet Oregon defensible space guidance and lower wildfire risk.

Defensible space is the buffer of reduced vegetation around a home that gives it a fighting chance in a wildfire and gives firefighters room to work. For rural Douglas County property owners, reducing fuel is both a safety step and, increasingly, something insurers and Oregon guidance expect. We clear brush, thin ladder fuels, and open up the zones around your structures so the space around your home works for you instead of against you.

What is included

  • Assessment of the zones around your home and outbuildings
  • Removing brush, blackberry, and low ladder fuels
  • Thinning and limbing to break up continuous vegetation
  • Clearing fuel back from structures, drives, and propane
  • Creating fire breaks and improving access for equipment
  • Hauling or mulching the material you want gone

The equipment for this job

Built for the heavy work

We reduce heavy fuel loads with the full-size excavator and remove what needs to leave with the semi dump truck. On overgrown or steep rural parcels, that capacity clears more ground per day than a small machine working the same brush.

Wildfire Fuel Reduction & Defensible Space questions

What does defensible space mean in Oregon?

Defensible space is a managed buffer around your home where vegetation is reduced so fire is less likely to reach the structure. Oregon's defensible space guidance describes zones moving outward from the home, with the most aggressive fuel reduction closest to the building. We work to those zones so your property lines up with current guidance.

Can clearing help with my home insurance?

It can. A number of Oregon property owners have faced insurance pressure tied to wildfire risk, and reducing fuel around the home is one of the steps insurers look for. We cannot speak for your carrier, though we can do the work that puts your property in a stronger position and document what we cleared.

When is the best time to do fuel reduction?

Ahead of fire season is ideal, so the work is done before the dry months arrive. That said, mechanical clearing and mulching can be done year round, unlike burning, which is limited by seasonal bans. Getting on the schedule early in the year is the safe plan.

Do you mulch the brush or haul it off?

Both are options. Mulching on site is cheaper, returns material to the ground, and avoids burn permits. Hauling it off leaves the cleanest result. We will recommend the approach that fits your property and budget.
